German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for an "immediate and
unconditional ceasefire" in Georgia.
She also urged the withdrawal
of all military forces "to their positions before the outbreak of
hostilities" and said Russian air attacks on Georgian territory
must be stopped "without delay". Merkel reportedly made the
statements in a telephone call to French President Nicolas Sarkozy,
the current holder of the EU presidency. Merkel and Sarkozy agreed
to stay in close consultation over the Georgian crisis. Earlier,
Paris announced that French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner would
travel to Tbilisi and Moscow in a bid to get the two sides to agree
to a ceasefire. The mediation efforts come ahead of an emergency
meeting of EU foreign ministers. The ministers are scheduled to
convene in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss the bloc's response to
the conflict in Georgia.
