Georgia has ordered its forces to cease fire in the breakaway
region of South Ossetia and offered to immediately begin talks with
Russia to end hostilities.
Georgia's Foreign Ministry reportedly
handed a notification to the Russian embassy in Tbilisi that its
armed forces were ceasing military actions. There has not yet been
any official Russian response to the Georgian offer to begin talks.
Russian media confirmed that the note had been received but also
claimed that fighting had not yet ceased in the area. Earlier on
Sunday, Georgia said its troops had retreated from South Ossetia
and that Russian forces were now in control of its capital
Tskhinvali. The fighting in Georgia's breakaway province broke out
on Friday after Georgian troops launched an operation to take
control of Tskhinvali. Russia responded by sending additional
troops to support the separatists in South Ossetia and Russian
fighter jets also bombed Georgian targets outside the conflict
zone, including several towns.
