Bolivians have been heading to the polls on Sunday to decide
whether President Evo Morales and other leaders will remain in
office.
Since his election in 2005, Morales has pushed through a
new constitution and enacted a series of socialist reforms to aid
the poor native population in the mountainous west. Sunday's recall
vote which was requested by Morales is the latest in a series of
showdown referenda between the socialist president and the
country's wealthy provinces over regional autonomy. Since the
beginning of the year, citizens in four provinces have voted for
greater autonomy from the national government. Morales declared
each vote unconstitutional and void.
