Bolivian President Evo Morales appears likely to remain in office
after winning majority support in a recall referendum.
Exit polls
said the socialist leader had secured 60 percent of votes, with 40
percent against.
The result of another poll gave Morales nearly 57 percent of the
ballot. Sunday's recall vote is the latest in a series of referenda
between the socialist president and the country's wealthy provinces
over regional autonomy. Since the beginning of the year, citizens
in four provinces have voted for greater autonomy from the national
government. Each time Morales declared the vote unconstitutional
and void. Morales assumed power in 2005 and has passed a new
constitution and enacted a series of socialist reforms to aid the
poor native population in the mountainous west.
