An assembly in Pakistan's Punjab province has demanded that
President Pervez Musharraf face a no confidence vote, informally
beginning the impeachment process against the Pakistani leader.
Similar resolutions are expected to be adopted in three other
provinces later this week when the National Assembly will formally
charge Musharraf with impeachable offenses.
The president's office
responded that Musharraf has "no intentions of resigning" and would
" face the impeachment motion with a democratic spirit." The
Pakistani leader came to power in 1999 in a bloodless coup and had
ruled unchallenged for more than seven years.
