The military situation in the Caucasus conflict continues to
escalate.
Separatist rebels in Georgia's second breakaway region of
Abkhazia have launched an offensive to retake the Kodori Gorge, a
pocket of the province that remains under Georgian control. Russian
forces pushed further into Georgian territory on Monday, briefly
occupying a military base in the town of Senaki, in the country's
west, and stationing troops near the town of Gori, which lies near
the border with South Ossetia. Georgia has pulled its forces back
to the capital, Tbilisi.
