NATO foreign ministers are converging on the headquarters of the
Western military alliance in Brussels to discuss how to respond to
the crisis in Georgia and future relations with Moscow.
Following
those talks, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is to travel on
to Warsaw where she is to sign a key missile defence shield pact
with Poland. The deal provides for the installation of US
interceptor missiles on Polish territory. The plan is a major bone
of contention between the US and Russia. Washington says the shield
is designed to fend off potential missile attacks by what it
describes as rogue states. Moscow sees it as a security
threat designed to undermine its own nuclear deterrent.
