Russia's ambassador to the United Nations has rejected a draft
Security Council resolution that would demand an immediate Russian
military withdrawal from Georgia.
Vitaly Churkin told the council
that the resolution should incorporate and endorse a
French-brokered ceasefire, which has been signed by both Russia and
Georgia. As a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia has
the power of veto and there has been no move to put the resolution
to a vote.
