The UN Security Council has condemned the recent military coup in
Mauritania.
The 15-member Council in New York adopted a non-binding
statement that demanded the immediate release of ousted president
Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi. The Council also called on the African
Union and the United Nations to support the democratically elected
government of Mauritania. Soldiers loyal to junta leader Ould Abdel
Aziz, the former head of the presidential guard, overthrew the
government on August 6 for attempting to fire Mauritania's top
military commanders.
