The African country of Zambia has begun a week of mourning for its
late president.
Levy Mwanawasa died at the age of 59 in a French
hospital weeks after suffering a stroke. World leaders hailed
Mwanawasa for his fight for democracy on the African continent.
Mwanawasa was one of the few African leaders to denounce the
governance and economic ruin of neighbouring Zimbabwe. Vice
President Rupiah Banda is expected to take over as head of state
until a presidential election, which must be held within 90 days.
