plane that crashed on takeoff in Madrid, killing 153 passengers.

people have survived the crash, some of them in critical condition.
Authorities have recovered the two black box flight recorders but
the cause of the disaster has not yet been determined. Witnesses
said the jet veered off the runway during take-off, before breaking
up and bursting into flames. Initial reports suggested there was a
fire in one of the two engines on the MD-82 aircraft. Spanish
Transportation Minister Magdalena Alvarez said the plane had
earlier turned back from the runway due to a technical problem,
which caused a one-hour delay in the take-off. The airliner,
operated by carrier Spanair, was bound for Las Palmas on the Canary
Islands.
