Spain has held a minute's silence for the victims of Wednesday's
plane crash in Madrid, which killed 153 people.
Relatives have been
identifying bodies as investigators try to establish why the
McDonnell Douglas MD-82 aircraft veered off the runway during
take-off. Only 19 of the 175 passengers and crew survived the
crash, and some are in a critical condition. There are reports that
the Spanair jet, destined for Las Palmas on the Canary Islands, had
aborted an earlier take-off attempt due to a mechanical failure.
Spanish media have reported that one of the plane's two engines
caught fire before it crashed.
