21.08.2008 - Obama says USA did not do much for Czechoslovak citizens in 1968

Senator Obama said in the speech available on YouTube server the United States has contributed to the building of a Europe in which no state need experience fear that Czechs and Slovaks experienced in 1968.
Obama said the cold war has been successfully terminated and the United States helped new democracies starting with the Czech Republic to Bulgaria stand up on their own feet.
The atrocities of the civil war in the Balkans have been stopped, Obama said.
He said the right to a free and safe live within own borders, that the former Soviet Union denied Czechs and Slovaks 40 years ago, must apply to all countries.
He said the current Russia-Georgia conflict has reminded of similar painful periods of history on the overcoming of which the Americans and Europeans have so hardly worked.

Washington and Moscow have joint interests such as anti-terrorism struggle, non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons and the improving of the environment.
Russia, however, is lagging behind in human rights observance, it is drifting away from democracy and it is trying to maintain its strength by the destabilisation of neighbours and the provocation of fear, Obama said within his November 4 presidential election campaign.
