The United Nation's top climate change official says time is
running out in the fight against global warming.
Speaking at the
start of a climate conference in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, Yvo
de Boer warned that industrialised countries needed to reach an
agreement soon to cut greenhouse gas emissions. More than 1,600
delegates from 160 countries are attending the latest round of UN
climate change talks. Ghana's president, John Kufuor, echoed the
sense of urgency in his opening remarks, noting that his country
was already suffering the consequences of global warming. The Group
of Eight industrialised powers have pledged to halve emissions by
2050, but critics say intermediate goals are needed.
