The second-largest party in Pakistan's coalition government has
named a new deadline to solve a key dispute with its partner.
The
announcement saves the fragile coalition from collapse. Former
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said his party expected the parliament
to pass legislation by next Wednesday to restore senior judges who
were ousted last year by President Pervez Musharraf. Until now, the
dominant Pakistan People's Party has agreed to restore all but one
of the justices. The wrangling between the two parties has
intensified since Musharraf agreed to step down on Monday.
Pakistani authorities have announced that elections for a new
president will take place on September 6.
