Some of the heaviest fighting in southern Somalia for months
continues between Islamist insurgents and pro-government militias.
Rights activists say that at least 50 people have been killed since
Wednesday in clashes in the southern city of Kismayu and in the
capital Mogadishu.
Residents in Kismayu said that insurgents of the
Islamist al-Shabaab group have won control of the port, which lies
some 500 kilometres south of Mogadishu. Islamic militants have been
conducting an Iraq-style insurgency since the beginning of 2007
when an Islamist-controlled government was overthrown by Ethiopian
forces.
