Русская версияUS Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has met with Israel's
Defence Minister Ehud Barak to discuss progress towards peace in
the region.
Rice welcomed the release of nearly 200 Palestinian
prisoners from Israeli jails; but Palestinian Authority President
Mahmoud Abbas said peace was only possible if all 11,000 of
Israel's Palestinian prisoners were released. Later on Tuesday Rice
is to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem and
Abbas in Ramallah. Rice will then hold a three-way meeting with
Israel's chief negotiator, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, and chief
Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qurie.
