Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called a meeting of Russia's
security council after parliament voted to recognise independence
for two Georgian rebel regions.
The United States said the move to
declare Abkhazia and South Ossetia independent from Georgia was
unacceptable, while European governments urged Medvedev not to go
along with it. Tensions are running high in the Black Sea after a
US Navy guided missile destroyer, ostensibly carrying humanitarian
aid, left the Georgian port of Batumi en route to Poti, where
Russian troops are stationed. Russia has accused NATO countries of
using aid as a front to build up naval forces in the Black Sea.
President Medvedev said on Monday Russia was prepared for a full
break with NATO.
