The United Nations mission in Afghanistan says it has found
convincing evidence that 90 civilians, including 60 children, were
killed in an airstrike last week.
The United States military had
denied that any civilians were hurt in Friday's airstrike in the
western province of Herat but promised to launch an investigation,
after Afghan villagers staged angry protests. Afghan President
Hamid Karzai condemned the strike, which allegedly hit mourners
gathered to mark the death of a local militant leader.
Afghanistan's government is now demanding a review of the presence
of US and NATO troops in the country, and their use of airstrikes.
