26.08.2008 - Czech president, PM disagree on Georgia

On Wednesday, the Czech government that supports Georgia will discuss the Czech position ahead of the extraordinary summit on Georgia organised by France on September 1.
Topolanek said the government wanted to agree on a rather open mandate without evaluation comments.
He said Klaus was invited to the government meeting.
Apart from Topolanek (Civic Democrats, ODS), the meeting with Klaus was attended by Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg (for Greens, SZ) and EU Affairs Minister Alexandr Vondra (ODS).
Topolanek said despite the different views the government and Klaus had, it was possible to discuss what is needed to be done in future and how to help.
"The main theses are clear.

It is humanitarian and development aid, peace in the region, territorial integrity of Georgia. I believe all statesmen agree on this," Topolanek said.
NATO strongly condemned Russia's invasion in Georgia and the relations between the allies and Russia have frozen. Moscow today recognised the independence of both Georgian breakaway regions, South Ossetia and Abkhasia.
The Civic Democrats considers Russia the party to be blamed for the conflict. On the contrary, Klaus, who is ODS honorary chairman, believes Georgia, especially President Mikheil Saakashvili, caused the conflict.
Klaus clashed with the Czech government on foreign policy issues already before. He was critical of the fact that the Czech Republic recognised the independence of Kosovo earlier this year.
