Western leaders have denounced Russia's recognition of the
independence of the two rebel Georgian regions of South Ossetia and
Abkhazia.
US President George W. Bush warned Moscow that this was
escalating tensions. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said
President Dimitry Medvedev's decision was "extremely unfortunate."
French officials say their country, which currently holds the
European Union presidency, is pushing for the EU to condemn the
move. German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for a "united"
European response and said the Kremlin's decision was unacceptable.
Georgia has described the move as an "unconcealed annexation."
