US media say Republican presidential candidate John McCain has
chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running
mate.
Palin has been governor of Alaska since December 2006 and was
the first woman to hold the position. The 44-year-old Palin is
known as an anticorruption crusader. She is also an opponent of
abortion rights and a member of the National Rifle
Association. If McCain were elected in the November 4
presidential election, Palin would become the first woman vice
president in the United States. Earlier, Democratic presidential
hopeful Barack Obama accepted his party's nomination with a rousing
speech in front of 84,000 supporters in Denver, Colorado. His
running mate is to be Delaware senator Joe Biden.
