The owners of a Spanish airliner that crashed on takeoff at Madrid
airport nine days ago had considered transferring passengers to
another plane, only minutes before the disaster.
The Spanair plane
bound for the Canary Islands was then given the OK, before it
crashed, killing 154 people. Transport Minister Magdalena
Alvarez told parliament that just before the plane took off, the
pilot noticed a technical problem. The pilot called off his first
takeoff attempt, but after a further inspection, the airline
decided to allow the plane to fly. Alvarez, however, dimissed
speculation that the crash happened because the airline, a
subsidiary of the Scandinavian SAS group, was in financial
difficulties.
