United States Republican presidential candidate John McCain has
chosen a woman to be his running mate.
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin
will run for the post of vice president on the McCain ticket. Palin
addressed the party faithful at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, shortly
after her nomination was announced. Observers say the 44-year-old
is a surprise choice, who is aimed at helping McCain appeal to
female voters. She is known as an anticorruption crusader, an
opponent of abortion rights and a member of the National Rifle
Association. Palin would also be the first female vice president,
if McCain were to win the election in November. Earlier, Democratic
presidential hopeful Barack Obama accepted his party's nomination
with a speech in front of 84,000 supporters in Denver,
Colorado.
