Thailand's Prime Minister has held a special meeting with the king
to brief him on the state of escalating anti-government protests.
Thailand's king holds little formal political power, but is widely
revered by Thais and has acted as a mediator in previous political
disputes.
Meanwhile, demonstrations aimed at unseating the
government appear to be spreading out from the capital across the
country. Thousands of right-wing protestors continued to barricade
Bangkok's main government compound for a fifth day on Saturday,
despite torrential rain. They accuse Prime Minister Samak
Sundaravej of acting as a proxy for ousted former Prime Minsiter
Thaksin Shinawatra. The government accuses the protestors of trying
to provoke a coup.
