Tropical Storm Gustav has been upgraded to a hurricane as it heads
towards the United States.
The US National Hurricane Center fears
Gustav could strengthen into a major Category 4 hurricane by the
time it reaches the US. Emergency officials warned that Gustav was
expected to be accompanied by a 15- to 30-foot storm surge along
the Gulf Coast, and said four states in its potential path were
expected to begin large-scale evacuations on Saturday. Gustav,
which has killed up to 77 people in the Caribbean, swept over the
Cayman Islands on Friday as it headed toward Cuba and the Gulf of
Mexico on the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
