Русская версияRussia has appealed to the European Union to adopt a pragmatic
approach to the Georgia crisis at an EU emergency summit on Monday.
In an interview with German public broadcaster ARD, Russian Prime
Minister Vladimir Putin said he hoped European leaders would be
"objective" in their assessment of the conflict between Russia and
Georgia.
Ahead of Monday's meeting, French Foreign Minister Bernard
Kouchner had raised the prospect of sanctions against Russia.
However, EU officials have meanwhile said that such a move was
unlikely. Russia is the bloc's largest energy supplier. Officials
said the Brussels summit is expected to boost support to Georgia
and condemn Russia's handling of the crisis. The EU has already
expressed its strong condemnation of Moscow's decision this week to
recognise the independence of the rebel Georgian regions of
Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
