Spanish authorities have released the leader of the banned Basque
separatist party Batasuna from a prison in San Sebastian.
Arnaldo
Otegi was jailed in June 2007 after the Supreme Court upheld a
15-month sentence for "glorifying terrorism". His party has been
banned since 2003 for refusing to condemn violence and break its
ties with the militant Basque separatist group ETA. Spanish
authorities say ETA is responsible for over 800 deaths during its
40-year campaign for an independent Basque homeland. It is
considered a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the
United States.
