The US National Hurricane Center says that tropical storm Gustav
has strengthened into a major Category 3 storm as it moved over
warm Caribbean waters toward western Cuba.
Officials say that
Gustav, which killed over 80 people in the Caribbean, is still on
track to strike the US coast west of New Orleans on Tuesday. US
emergency officials warned that Gustav could be accompanied by an
up to 30-foot storm surge along the Gulf Coast, and said four
states in its potential path were expected to begin large-scale
evacuations on Saturday. Hurricane Katrina was a Category 5 in the
Gulf of Mexico before coming ashore near New Orleans as a Category
3 in 2005.
