Tens of thousands of Taiwanese have marched in the streets of
Taiwan's capital to protest the president's efforts to improve
relations with China.
Protesters said they were worried that
President Ma Ying-jeou is leaning toward China too quickly and that
it might bring disastrous political consequences. Saturday's
protest is the first mass rally against Ma since his inauguration
about 3 months ago. Taiwan's sovereignty has been long disputed
between Taipei and Beijing. The two sides split amid civil war in
1949, but China continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory.
