Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has arrived in Libya to
sign a "friendship pact" with his counterpart Muammar Gaddafi.
Under the deal, Italy will pay some 3.5 billion euros in
compensation for abuses committed during its colonial rule of the
North African country.
Berlusconi said the money would be invested
in infrastructure projects in Libya over the next 25 years. In
return, Rome wants Libya to crack down on illegal migrants turning
up on Italian shores. The accord should remove the latest hurdle to
improve ties between Italy and Libya, a major energy producer.
