The US Federal Emergency Management Agency expects Hurricane Gustav
to make landfall on the Gulf of Mexico coast as early as Monday as
a Category 5 storm.
Speaking at a press conference, the agency's
chief David Paulison said enough transport assistance was in place
to completely evacuate the city of New Orleans. The organisation
was accused of failing to provide sufficient help when Hurricane
Katrina, a Category 3 storm, caused massive flooding three years
ago. Roads leading out of the area are heavily congested with
evacuees. With wind speeds over 230 km/h, Gustav has already hit
Cuba, where a major evacuation effort is underway. Close to 80
people have been killed in the Caribbean hurricane so far.
