Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin
has urged the European Union to ignore calls from Tbilisi to punish
Moscow over the Georgia conflict. In the lead-up to an EU emergency
summit on Monday, Russia has appealed to the bloc to adopt a
pragmatic approach to the crisis. In an interview with German
public broadcaster ARD, Putin said he hoped European leaders would
assess the conflict objectively. He also said that Russia would
like to see observers from the EU enter the buffer zones around
breakaway regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia when Russian troops
withdraw.
