Britain's finance ministry has warned that the country is facing
the worst economic downturn in 60 years.
Chancellor of the
Exchequer Alistair Darling said in an interview with the Guardian
newspaper that the crisis would be "more profound and long-lasting"
than people had expected. Darling's statement came after official
economic data this month showed zero growth in the second quarter.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to unveil a package of
measures next week to support the economy and the housing market.
