Spanish authorities have released the former leader of the banned
Basque separatist party Batasuna from a prison in San Sebastian.
Arnaldo Otegi was jailed in June 2007 after the Supreme Court
upheld a 15-month sentence for "glorifying terrorism".
Otegi said
he believes only dialogue and negotiation can help end the Basque
separatist conflict. He also called for the release of all Basque
separatist prisoners. His party has been banned since 2003 for
refusing to condemn violence and break its ties with the militant
Basque separatist group ETA. Spanish authorities say ETA is
responsible for over 800 deaths during its 40-year campaign for an
independent Basque homeland.
