Italy has agreed to pay Libya about 3.5 billion euros compensation
for abuses committed during its colonial rule of the North African
country.
The 30-year occupation ended in 1943. The compensation
deal was signed by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and
Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in Benghazi on Saturday. Speaking in
the Libyan capital, Berlusconi apologised to Libya for the damage
inflicted by Italy during the colonial era. The pledged funds are
to be invested in infrastructure projects in Libya over the next 25
years. In return, Rome wants Libya to stem the flow of illegal
migrants turning up on Italian shores.
