Russia and Germany will try to calm tensions in Europe over the
conflict in Georgia.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter
Steinmeier and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov agreed via
telephone to put an end to rising tensions. However, Steinmeier
reiterated his criticism of Russia's decision to recognise the
independence of the two Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and
South Ossetia. The foreign minister also criticised Georgia's move
to break all diplomatic ties with Russia. Meanwhile European
leaders are gearing up for an emergency EU meeting on the Georgia
crisis that is scheduled to kick off in Brussels in Monday. The
27-member bloc will also use the meeting to re-examine its
relations with Moscow. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has
urged EU leaders to show "common sense" at the summit and ignore
calls for sanctions against Moscow.
