Pakistan has suspended a major military operation against
insurgents in the restive north west in honour of the Muslim holy
month of Ramadan.
However, Pakistani officials emphasised that
security forces would retaliate should any militants conduct
attacks. The suspension is to take effect at midnight on Sunday.
Clashes between the security forces and the militants close to the
Afghan border have intensified in recent months. The government
estimates that up to 300,000 people have fled from the violence.
